Monday night…..
Post match in the locker room.
OGDA is sitting on the bench fresh from his shower, dressed and ready to leave after his match.
With him is Spartacus, his kitty cat. OGDA has a bit of string and he is teasing Sparky with it, who is on his back swatting at the string with his eyes all wide eyed, so determined to get that string. Even though we can’t see his face, with the mask and all, OGDA is sporting a huge smile.
“Bester!” Joe shouts as he walks into the locker room. OGDA looks up at his buddy.
“Mr. Jones! This is a surprise.”
“huh…..Why you say that?” Joe says a bit puzzled.
“Well Mr. Nanook would never see me after one of my matches that’s all. He was too busy making sure that I got paid, which then he would hold onto for me till the end of the month.”
Joe sits down next to Bester. “Really? He did that shit to you?”
“Mr. Jones…”
“Sorry.” Joe is quick to say forgetting that Bester doesn’t like swear words.
“Bester!” Joe says as he pats OGDA on the back. “Nanook isn’t here no more, this is a new era. The era of OGDA! Things are going to be different! Like getting paid. No more waiting till the end of the month.”
“Really? Cuz I have a gym membership that is due.”
“Check your account in the morning Best. It’ll be in there.”
“Really?”
“Would I lie to you?” Joe says. He also crosses his fingers behind his back. “Listen, I didn’t come in here to talk about your paycheck. We had those talks when you signed with OCW. Your money goes into your bank account every Monday night. But what I did come in here to say was this.”
Joe stands and he leans over and quickly pets Spartacus’ belly, which you know, he just loved. Cats love having their bellies petted.
“What you did out there tonight, what you did to Jack Puffer, was just freaking awesome!”
“Really?”
“Oh my goodness yes! Didn’t you hear them out there when you spears him in two. They ate that shit up.”
“Mr. Jones…”
“I know, I know, but I just can’t help myself Best! That shit was fucking awesome! Pardon my french, but if you keep that up. I see championship gold in your future.”
Like a puppy dog, this makes Bester’s ears perk up. “You really think so Mr. Jones?”
Joe nods. “Yeah I do. In fact, the OCW, they think so too. Marcus…”
“Mr. Welsh?”
“Yes, Mr. Welsh.”
“He was so nice to me when I signed my contract. Very polite and he has a nice smile. His mom should be so proud of him, he grew up to be a upstanding gentlemen.”
“Hmmm. He did have a nice smile.” Joe adds, which now sounds a tad creepy. “There was something about that five o’clock shadow….”
“Mr. Jones?” Bester says with a touch of nervousness in his voice.
“Yes! Sorry. Mister Welsh gave you a match for next week. If you win, you get a title match.”
OGDA gets wide eyed. He stands up dropping the string on Sparky and he’s all like, I’ve got it! I must eat you!
“For reals?”
“For reals. None of that broken promises that Nanook did to you. How many title shots did he promise you?”
“Like, I forgot how many! You know Mr. Jones, I have never had a title opportunity, let alone have a match in which, if I win I get a title match. Which title is it? You know what! Doesn’t matter! I don’t care which title it is, I would just once like to say that I have a shot to have a title match.”
“You earned it Best. I told you, go out there and fuck Puffer up and they will have to take notice. You did just that and they noticed you.”
OGDA starts to pace back and forth.
“And think about the Rainbow warriors. Think about their reaction, how excited they’ll be next week when you beat Hernandez and O'Neil into a pulp. When you leave both of them broken in middle of that ring. You do that, and, that will put you on the Mayhem on the Midway show, on the big stage where you belong. In front of the camera’s, with every Shining Star there, all cheering you on, giving you the strength to forge on and claim that Paradigm Championship as yours.”
OGDA is getting so pumped up about the thought of all of this. So much so he slaps his head a couple of times. Joe steps in front of him and stops him. He looks Bester in his eyes.
“Did I tell you that O’Neil doesn’t like cats?”
“WHAT!” OGDA exclaims.
“I heard he calls them the most useless animal in the world and they should be eradicated.”
OGDA places his hands on his hips.
“Is that so?”
Joe puts his hands up and takes a step back.
“That is what I heard.”
OGDA takes a step towards Joe and gets in his face.
“You know who is going to be extinct come next Monday?” OGDA says definitely.
“No? Who?”
“Mr. O'Neil.” OGDA growls and storms out of the room, Spartacus in tow. Joe smirks.
“Did you see it?”
Scene fades in with OGDA facing a old concrete wall that was painted white several decades ago and also sports a rainbow on it, that has been faded by the sun over the years. OGDA has his hands on the wall, his back to the camera.
“Did you feel it?”
OGDA slowly traces the bottom of the rainbow with his fingers.
“Did you witness it?”
OGDA slowly turns his head towards the camera.
“Did you see what happens when the power of every Shining star…..”
“When the Rainbow Warriors……”
“When they unite and join forces with me, the defender and keeper of the Rainbows, When every little buddy out there in that building, at home watching on TV, streaming the show in the comfort of their bedroom forts on their phones.”
OGDA slowly balls his hands into fists.
“Nothing and no one can stop us. Go find Mr. Puffer. Go ask him what hit him. Sit down next to him in his hospital bed and ask him, if he ever stood a chance?”
OGDA slowly turns towards the camera.
“Orgulloso Guardian Del Arcoiris, it’s just not a name. It’s just not a mask. It’s a lifestyle. I am the hopes and dreams of every little shining star out there in the world, that when they see a rainbow, they make a wish and they wish that they could be bigger, stronger, empowered to stand up to the bullies of the world. They wish they can knock those who mock and ridicule them non stop at school, in the gym, at the library, on the bus, They wish they could make those who pick on them for being different, for being special, they wish they could make them leave them alone. I hear those wishes, those dreams for a world in which we all get along, and it feeds me.”
“It empowers me.”
“It transforms me.”
“I was once just like them. Laughed at. Stuffed in lockers. Had spitballs spit at me. Bubble gum smooched in my hair. My pants pulled down in front of Miss. Holt, the prettiest girl in all of highschool and she laughed…….”
OGDA lowers his head and squeezes the bridge of his nose, fighting back the tears from that moment.
“I can’t help it that I love Winnie the Pooh! Real men wear Winnie the Pooh underoos!”
OGDA throws his fist back at the wall, striking it.
“I fight for them! I fight the bullies. I beat the meanies into submission. I break the jocks in two. I do this, not only for me, but for them. I show them that you no longer have to take the abuse. That it is okay to stand up for yourself. Win or lose, it’ll be okay.”
“But.”
“Just okay doesn’t work in my book. Okay isn’t going to cut it. Okay isn’t going to get it done. Do you know what my Rainbow warriors, my Shining Stars, each and every single Little Buddy in the world, do you know what they want? Do you know what they have told me?”
OGDA slowly motions a championship belt around his waist.
“I have heard those prayers. I have read the emails. The posts on the twitter. I’ve gotten the message loud and clear! Apparently OCW have read and heard the Rainbow Warriors too cuz they have granted me a chance to qualify, to secure not only myself, but the Rainbow nation a shot at a championship. There is just one, small, tiny, task in front of me.”
“Mrs. Hernandez.”
“Mr. O'Neil.”
“Prepare to be beaten up.”
“Prepare to be broken.”
“Prepare to be busted in two, left on the side of the road like some unwanted dog that can’t be house broken. Left to wander looking for a new home, looking for food, looking for someone to love you. I am on a quest! A quest of such high importance, that not even you two together will be able to stop me. I am the wrecking ball that is going to break up this group of haters and naysayers in OCW. I will lay waste to anyone in my way.”
“I’m not here to make new friends. I’m not here to be liked. I’m not here to be your buddy.”
OGDA takes a step towards the camera.
“I’m here, to make each and every single Rainbow Warrior, the next Paradigm Champion.”
