Backstage after hours in the locker room where Joe Jones is all alone. Just him still in his wrestling gear sitting in front of his locker holding a piece of paper in front of him. The contract for a Heritage title match between him and Caleb Hart.
For the ones who kept count, this will be match number 7, the first since August and it will go down on the final show of the year, at Final Countdown.
For the last 2 weeks, Joe has been fighting to get this match. From the second that Hart said he is leaving with the title, the only guy who took up the fight has been Joe Jones. If it wasn't for him, the Heritage title would disappear from the UWL leaving a void in the championship picture in the UWL. Everything Hart has done since the day he stepped in the UWL, was all about him. Very little he did, benefited the UWL. About the only thing Caleb did that was a positive for the UWL, was the TV title. Hart made it worth something again in the UWL. Anything after that, was only done to fuel his ego.
"So here it is. Signed sealed and delivered. The last thing standing between Hart leaving with the Heritage title or not is me. One last time by the looks of it, I will step into that ring with Hart and look him in the eye and do the dance once more. If I want to get that "win that got away" this will be the final time I can get it. And you know what? This time. I will get that win."
Joe folds the contract up and holds up the folded piece of paper.
"And if some how, if by some fluke Hart ends up winning this match....."
Joe drops his head as the mere thought of that is just sad.
"I will walk to merch table and buy that ridiculous Kneel T shirt and wear it in the ring and kneel because at this point, if I can't beat Hart, it's just not never going to happen."
Joe takes the contract and slips into his gym bag. He looks back up at the camera.
"Since our last match Caleb, I've had time to sit back and reflect on everything that went down. I had time to digest our matches, why we're battling each other and what was on the line. At first I wanted to test myself. You were a damn good opponent. I won't ever say other wise. After that first match I was like, Okay I have to get better here and there. I have some stuff to work on. When I first walked in the UWL, I was barely working out there in Vegas, maybe having a match once every 3 months for the last two years and while the down time was nice to heal some old nagging injuries and get into better shape, the lack of ring time caught up to me. I went from not working to grinding away week in and week out. I had a bad case of ring rust. I wanted to face you again to push me, to challenge me. At first, that's what we had. Then when you got your hands on that TV title...."
Joe shakes his head slightly.
"Overnight your head grew. It was like you were the Crinch or something. On that night in Japan, Hart's head swelled 3 times bigger that day. If I remember correctly you yourself was coming off a long hiatus too. The first month....month and half Hart, I showed you nothing but respect. But as the weeks went by, that's when we saw the real Caleb Hart. The self centered only in it for himself asshat who thought he was better than the UWL. The guy who came into the UWL looking to jumpstart his career again, soon was the prick of the UWL. I'll never understand how you had the fans cheering for you as long as they were. You were just straight up a dick."
Joe reaches down and zips his gym bag closed. He then picks up the water bottle next to him on the bench.
"The disrespect you not only showed me but everyone in the UWL, I just couldn't stand for it anymore. Hell the only guys in the UWL who had any set of balls to stand up and take a stand were me and Wolf Parker. And now there is just me here, taking another stand against you Hart. I'm picking up the UWL flag and waving it in the air. We have had one hell of a war you and I, but you're no longer the darling of the UWL and I'm fighting not only for myself, to get that win I know in my heart I can get, but I'm fighting for the UWL, it's fans, and that title!"
Joe stands up and looks down at the camera
"The last time it was just you and I in the ring....I had you beat. If it wasn't for Parker, you would have submit or passed out. Either way, I was going to have my hand raised in the air and declared the winner. This Saturday night at Final Countdown there is no Roach, there is no Aphonic, there is no Troy Vincent to tag with, and there is no Wolf Parker to get in the way and allow you to score the cheap pin fall."
Joe smirks and snickers.
"Funny. Everyone that was ever in the ring with you and at the same time, none of them are here. They all left the UWL for whatever reason. Causality of the war. They got shot down in the heat of the battle. We have had one hell of a battle Hart, you and I, but the war. It ends this week at Final Countdown. So far you have won every battle we have had. But now that we are the last two on the battle field...."
Joe takes a sip of water and pauses for a second. He glances down at the floor and back up at the camera as the camera has slowly moved up to eye level with him.
"I like my chances to win the war. This match is the ultimate last man standing match."
Joe narrows his eyes.
"Mark my words, there is no way you're leaving with that Heritage title. I will come out the victor of the war, when I make you surrender."
Fade out.
