In history masked men usually are trying to hide something. Either their identity of who they are or their nationality. Some times both like the Jews in WW2. Kings would wear masks to be able to partake in dangerous sports such as jousting. King Henry was famous for this. Then along came masquerades. Which opened the door for everyone, the poor and the elite. There they will be able to wear a mask in which it covered their face and would be able to mingle and dance at balls and other social events with out the risk of being caught to say.
Today, masks are usually only worn in times of war namely chemical warfare. But there are also a few who will dawn the ski mask for robberies on small convenient stores and banks. Masked men are not as common as they once used to be. And not all masked men where "evil" Some of the more famous masked men in folk lore are heroes today. Zero, Batman, Spiderman, and the list goes on. Some are fiction and some are loosely based on fact. But for the most part, masks are worn by professional wrestlers. Predominant in Mexico and Japan a few have found there way into the states. And our man Disgruntle is no different.
This is a bio from an outsiders point of view. I have followed this masked man Disgruntle around for years now. My name is not important as I am just a watcher. I’m simply here to shed some light on our masked man in black.
Back in the spring of 93 was when I first saw our man in black wrestle. He was then going by the name of Zeus. He just started his wrestling career then. Word had it that he spent some time in school across the nation learning first hand the craft of his trade. I am probably the only person who has seen his face. The only one who remembers him anyways. He wrestled for a short time under the name Zeus before packing it in. He was told he didn’t have that look that anyone was looking for. He didn’t have the build and at just barely 200 pounds he didn’t. But he was quick, lighting fast and agile like a cat. He could fly around the ring and not make a sound. He had the drive and the desire to be a champion but it was not to be in the united states. From there he traveled south to Mexico. Once in Mexico he landed a job with a traveling promotion. The pay was bad and so was the work nut in this business you have to pay your dues. Six months would pass before I caught up with him again. By this point he was thinking about going under the mask, as a unmasked man in a masked world he was the single man on the outside looking in. His weight training was coming along as he packed on 20 pounds of bulk. But in Mexico masks were in and he was out. And in July of 94 Disgruntle was born. At first there was a real meaning behind his new wrestling name. Disgruntled he was because he couldn’t make it on face value and also wearing a mask would mean he would have no change of ever making it in the states. Two years would pass and Disgruntle would become one of the most popular wrestlers in Mexico of all time. Both as a fan favorite and as the dreaded evil guy. His mask was simple compared to most. It started out as a plain black mask then later he added his logo that a fan created for him. Of course when he had the logo on his masked he lost every match and so as you can guess off came the logo. Disgruntle who hails from Germany gotten into the history of Germany and got into current events. He started to make more and more political statements in his promos and speeches on TV. This was starting to set him apart from the pack as a great mic guy as they are called. Not only could he talk the talk, but he could walk the walk. Son after he added flames to his mask and to his trunks that he was wearing back then. The flames represented the fire in him, the desire to win, to be the best and the also represented that the fire that continues to burn in society from past events in history. Bill Joel would say it best in a song, we didn’t start the fire.
Towards the end of his second year in Mexico, times were changing. Guys were now crossing the borders and finding work in the states as a masked wrestler. Not only were they find work, they were finding work that paid ten times more than Mexico and they were making names for themselves as well. Disgruntle tried but no was buying. A German wrestling in the tradition of Mexico just didn’t seem to go over in the states. Sad part was you couldn’t even tell he was German. It was time to leave Mexico. Even WCW wouldn’t touch him.
At the tender age of 25 he flew across the world and hooked up in Japan. There stories have traveled to Japan about him and he was a star as soon as the plane landed. There was just on catch. Hardcore as we all know is king in Japan. To Disgruntle hardcore just wasn’t him. There’s no skill in hardcore type of matches. But he stuck it out and quickly he scrambled to a full body suit to which he still wears today. He padded the suit and his mask in so he could take deadly blows and not get hurt as much and it kept scarring down to a minimal. Disgruntle would remain in Japan for a year in which he was a star from day one. Success was his. It was about this point in time in which hardcore was the rave in the States. Again Disgruntled was over looked and passed over. Which to him was a good thing. This time he didn’t mind.
As the matches in Japan got more and more violent Disgruntle decided it was time to leave Japan. When exploding tables started to become factors in matches Disgruntle knew this wasn’t for him. He returned home.
Once home he relaxed and healed some injuries he sustained in Japan and as luck would have it he luck was about to change. The Wrestling All Stars were touring Germany and they asked Disgruntle to join them. They heard about him from a tour in Mexico and Japan. All around the world, as wrestlers were unmasking themselves to be able to keep their jobs Disgruntle was making it big as a masked wrestler. How Ironic. Disgruntle would tour with the All Stars till they fell through in late 98.
Disgruntle quickly was offered work in Canada. He was all over it. If the Wrestling All Stars were good to him, Canada would be great. Not only did it get him one step closer to the states but he was also able to make the leap to the states. ECW was in Canada and Disgruntled was asked to work a few shows. Impressed Paul was that he took him back to Philly. Sadly ECW closed it’s door but WCW was there picking up anyone from ECW who had a name and Disgruntle was offered a contract.
He excepted but before he could ever wrestle on TV or in WCW for that matter WCW was bought out by the WWF and Disgruntle was dropped as a result of the buy out. But with a complete buy out in his hands, Disgruntle had the resources to travel in the states trying to make a name for himself in hopes of getting signed with the WWE.
The road has been long and hard. Things are looking up for him now. There are rumors floating around in the dirt sheets that the Disgruntle that wrestles in the BLPW is not the original one that started way back in 93, that the original Disgruntle has retired or unmasked himself and is now working with the WWE. I don’t know if this is true or not as I have lost track of him over the past year or so. It has been almost 10 years since I saw his face and no pictures exist for that matter. The only one who knows the truth is Disgruntle himself. Maybe some day we will learn the truth but what we do know is that the legend that is Disgruntle does carry on in the BLPW.
Who is the man who calls himself Disgruntle?
And why in a era of wrestling in which masks are frowned upon does he wear one still? What purpose does it hold?
Maybe some day we will all find out the answers to these questions and more.
