Nanook is standing in front of a CWA banner backstage at Overdrive after the show last weekend. He is looking up and rubbing his hands together.
“Just a few hours ago….” Nanook starts out saying and slowly lowers his chin and fixes his eyes on the camera lens. “NASCAR Billy was in the event in the first event for the CWA in a long long time. NASCAR Billy was in the ring against a guy, a legend who was at one time the standard in this sport. Scavenger was where the bar was set and if you could even reach that bar let alone somehow nudge yourself over that bar…...well you were doing pretty good for yourself. So when I heard that the CWA was getting rebooted, was going to hit the road once again and hit the airwaves, as NASCAR Billy’s agent I knew that was the place for him to showcase himself. The CWA is a place for NASCAR Billy to test himself, to grow as a professional wrestler and maybe, just maybe the CWA is where he will grow to be the best of the best. So I knew that even a older Scavenger was going to be a challenge for my client NASCAR Billy.”
Nanook holds his hands out.
“So a little while ago, in the Main Event of Overdrive NASCAR Billy picked up the win over Scavenger and well…..I guess the old saying of a win is win rings true but seeing Scavenger beating counted out…….”
Nanook crosses his arms and places his one hand under his chin.
“It pained me. Pained me to see Scavenger get counted out. It’s like that Toby Keith song, I’m not as good as I once was. I remember Scavenger, the animal! The beast! The best there was and there he was, struggling to roll in under the bottom as the ref counted 10. He would have never been caught being counted out.”
Nanook shakes his head.
“It only happens once, winning your debut match in whatever company you are working for. You only have one shot at winning your first match for your new employer and while Billy didn’t pin Scavenger he did how ever win his match leaving his record in the CWA spotless. Will it continue? We shall see.”
NASCAR Billy walks into the shot. He is dripping wet from a shower, the shoulders on his shirt are damp. He is holding a mason jar in his right hand.
“A win is a win but not all wins are made da same. Ever since I agreed to join the CWA I have been hearing all sorts of stories about you Scavenger. Nanook told me tales. Joe Jones told me tales. If I hung around long enough after the show I’m sure Hoshi would have told me tales of Scavenger. So I was amp’ed up about dis match here tonight. I was envisioning……”
Billy pauses and can’t come up with the word he is searching for so he takes a sip from his mason jar.
“Who knows what I thought I was going to see from Scavenger but from inside dat ring seeing you getting counted out….kinda left me disappointed. Everything I was told all week long, I saw none of it here tonight. Not even a hint of what I was told. So….you know where that leaves me.”
Billy takes another sip.
“With some regret. Regret that I didn’t break the count. Regret that I didn’t roll you back into the ring and beat on ya some more and plant ya in middle of the ring and get the one, two and three and send a message to the rest of the CWA that NASCAR Billy is here to take names and dominate. Now I look...weak? I was in the main event! That is telling everyone that I am one of the best in the CWA and I won by a count out.”
Nanook pats Billy on the back.
“It’s okay Billy.”
“NO! No it’s not! I want to go down as the first CWA champion for it’s reboot! I needed to send a message and I failed at that. But next week…..I’ll make that up.”
Billy faces the camera.
“In the battle royal. I will take every single of ya and toss ya over the top rope! I will be crowned as the number one contender! Der isn’t anyone in the CWA who wants to get der hands on dat title more den me and this week…..I don’t care who is in dat ring with me. You will go over that rope. One by one, you will all fail!”
Billy takes another sip and nods.
“Count on it!”
Fade out.
