You might know this but Billy lives up to his name Nascar…..
No he doesn’t race in Nascar, not that he isn’t trying but he does race. On dirt in a big block modified cuz, as the old saying goes, there is no substitute for cubic inches. Billy lives in a camper in Knoxville and he lives in a camper because just about all of his money goes into his race car so he has no extra money for stuff like a apartment. His camper sits in back of his race shop which is a old warehouse that Nanook bought in one of many real estate deals he has going on as that is pretty much how Nanook makes a living to pay the bills and until Nanook flips that building, Billy can use it as his shop. So with the free rent sometimes Nanook makes Billy do something he doesn’t want.
Like take bath. J/K
More like stuff like today. Like going shopping. Nanook is always on the hunt for stuff for homes he’s in middle of flipping, to dress them up for the open house so you can see what it looks like if someone was living there, so you can “picture” yourself there and sometimes some of the pieces he finds, he ends up selling to the new homeowner as well. Just imagine it as Nanook being a antique dealer without a shop and today Nanook is on the hunt so he dragged BIlly out with him. Today Nanook brought Billy with him to this little hole in the wall he likes to scoop out now and then to show him something that will explain his match against Scavenger this week.
As they open the door and the little bell above the door rings letting Harold know that someone is there and you can tell Billy already has no interest in being there.
”Ah there we go Billy. Look at all of this stuff!” Nanook says as he holds his arms outwards so Billy can behold everything. Billy just looks at him with this look of disgust.
”All this crap should be in da junk yard. You know dat right?” Billy says as he pushes past Nanook to start looking around and to get this over with more like it. And maybe just maybe they have some old speed parts hidden in the junk.
”Oh Billy. You need to open your eyes and look around. There is money in here. I can make money on this stuff….maybe. Never know.”
So they look around and what would you know, nothing. Billy doesn’t see anything and after like, 5 minutes he’s done and ready to go. Nanook keeps digging but after 30 minutes which was killing Billy he’s finally done. Harold the old timer who owns the joint has been leaning on the counter the whole time.
”Ready?” Billy finally asks. Nanook sighs. ”Yeah I Guess. Nothing today. Harold you’re letting me down buddy.”
Harold doesn’t say much.
”So what was it that you wanted to show me? I have to get back to the shop. Big race in Charlotte next week.”
”Oh yeah! Over here. Check this out Billy.” Nanook motions with a wave of the arm. Billy follows Nanook over to the music section and on a table are a bunch of old record players. Billy looks at them and looks at Billy. He shrugs.
”And?”
”You know what they are?”
”Nope and I don’t care either.”
”This was the only way to listen to music for a longtime. Like from the 40’s all the way up till the 80’s. This was it. Listen to what you wanted to listen too. Records were the greatest thing ever.”
Billy shakes his head ”And? What does this have to do with my match with Scavenger? He’s just a old broken down shell of himself.”
Harold pipes in. “When I was your age, there was nothing better than sitting around with a pint, a joint, a good looking girl with big old boobs and a stack of kick ass records. Oh man the stories I could tell you sitting around the HiFi system I had in the basement…..I wish I could remember it all though. I think I smoked too much bad them. Hey kid. When I was your age, there was nothing better than sitting around….”
Billy cuts him off. Harold seems to have a real bad short term memory problem. ”Yeah I get it. Look. I have my Ipod on my Iphone. 10,000 songs and no need to flip a record ever so often.”
”Yeah I get that but your Ipod will never sound as good as a record. Besides. Scavenger has much more in common with these old records than you think.”
”Like what?”
”These records are coming back in style. They never really went away. Their making a come back.”
”Yeah by hippersters.”
”Who cares. Hippersters have money, a lot of disposable money and they part with it very easily for stuff that is vintage. Not only do they like this old junk as you would say, but if you take, say a old t shirt that no one makes anymore and reproduce it, update it ever so slightly to make it look even older or vintage. They eat that stuff up.”
”Listen...boss. If you want to look at old records and get into the music industry than, whatever. I bought a Hellcat a couple of weeks back. It’s a nice day out, I want to put some miles on it. I don’t have time for this….”
”Scavenger is the record. He has been around forever, everyone knows him, everyone loves him but no one knows he’s back. He is a more than just a opponent for you this week. He’s more than some old guy from the CWA. Scavenger needs help. He needs to be dusted off, he needs to polished some. Someone needs to spit shine him and represent him under a new light to a new audience. That is why I want you to win this week. Not just for you, but for me. There is money to be made with Scavenger. I can get him in front of a new group of fans….fans with money who want brand new Scavenger t shirts. I’m not just going to be the manager to the future CWA World champion, the hottest rising star in professional wrestling today! But I’m going to be the manager to the new, improved! Better than ever ass kicking machine that Scavenger used to be! He will be like the phoenix! Rising up from the ashes to kick ass once again! And I’ll be there, guiding him the whole way!” Nanook puts his hands on Billy’s upper chest and slaps him a couple of times.
”When I’m not busy going to the bank cashing big royalty checks! You do this for me, I’ll cut you in. If you don’t believe me, go to FYE right now. Go there! And look at the huge Vinyl selection they have and more importantly look at what they charge for the new Pretty Reckless record. Now just picture all of those records as brand new, ready to sell Scavenger shirts. You know more than anyone just how rabid wrestling fans are! Look at all of the shirts you sell alone and you’re new on the scene! Now just think of someone with a established following….someone like Scavenger and yes Hoshi hence why I gave her my card….just think of the numbers they can move. I’ll cut you in. I’ll give you a slice of the pie and all you have to do, is defeat Scavenger.”
Billy is a simple guy. He doesn’t fully get all of the merch stuff like Nanook does, the nuts and bolts of it but he knows how the checks he gets from his cut of it look like. It funded his drag car last year and funded his dirt car this year. It also allowed him to go legal and become a distiller so he can make his Shine without fear of getting caught.
Billy nods ”I’ve done it once….hell I can do it again. How hard can it be you know?”
Billy seems on board as he pats Nanook on the shoulder and makes his way towards the door. Nanook turns and watches him leave.
”Harder than you think Billy. Scavenger will be fighting for his freedom.”
Fade out.
