Destiny…….
He tried to avoid them all week.
He really did.
Jessica, Nanook……
Billy wanted to get through the week without them whispering in his ear filling his head with nonsense. But it’s kinda hard to avoid your own girlfriend when you wake up in the same bed with her and your manager knows where you live seeing how he helped you moved in, you know that one whole box he moved for you. Billy tried to keep his distance from them. He let the battery on his phone run dead Monday and while Jessica “got it”....she still had a job to do and she reminded Billy of this as she cornered him at the race shop.
”I haven’t been able to talk to any of the Coronation Cup semi finalists! I barely got Brandon Shadows to sit still for me today! This is a big deal, one of the biggest moments of the year for the UWL, one of you are going to win the whole thing and go on to face Caleb Hart next month at Grand Voyage! I have to do this! I don’t except Comley to grant me a interview and Bowers is a tough man to track down. Out of the four of you guys, YOU should be the easiest of the four for me to get a few words from! It’s Friday Billy! I gave you space all week the least you can do is give me 30 minutes!” Jessica says as she lays down the law.
Billy is standing in front of his Big Block DIRT modified with his hands on his hips and isn’t facing Jessica.
”I don’t know why you are so against this Billy.”
"I don’t want the distraction.” Billy says as he glances over his shoulder. Jessica crosses her arms and starts to tap her foot.
”Is THAT what I am? A distraction? Everything other time you begged me to interview you! I remember that one time when you got down on your knees and begged me William!” That can’t be good when Jess uses his proper first name. ”Begged me to give you just five minutes! I gave in to it every time William! I gave you five minutes! Every freaking time! Now all I ask for is 30 minutes tops so you can get some of your thoughts on tape so the fans out there can get a feel for you as you enter the two biggest matches in your career and now I’m a distraction?”
BIlly runs his hands through his hair brushing it back and sighs.
”You know what! FINE!” Talk about hell and brimstone, you would have sworn Satan was yelling at Billy. “Have it your way! The next time you want to spend some time with me at bedtime, I’m going to be distracted too, with a headache! You’ll just have to find something else to do with yourself for those two minutes! And one more thing, for the last freaking time….CAMO NOT’S A COLOR!!!!”
Jessica storms off in a huff and ten second later you hear her slamming the crap out of the door as hard as she can. Then you hear Billy’s brand new Hellcat starting up and Jessica burning the tires off of it as she speeds off. That part did bring a smile to his face but then he remembers he’s stuck with her Honda Civic and that’s not good.
Billy punches the side of his hauler with his fist.
"DAMN IT!”
He punches it again and then Billy…...because I don’t really know why, he head butts it. He sighs and as he is leaning up against it he discovers that he isn’t alone in his race shop.
“You know that girl will be the end of you right?” A deep baritone voice says causing Billy is snap around. It’s a voice he hasn’t heard in months and one he thought he would never hear again. Standing in race shop is none other than Steve Sinclair!!!!
"What da fuck are you doin’ here!” Billy demands as he makes two fists and is ready for a fight. Steve raises his one hand up and smiles. For a guy who took a piledriver on a concrete floor he looks fine, like it never happened.
“Relax big guy. You won the war.” Steve says as he lowers his hand and run his finger along the hood of his race car leaving a finger streak in the dust that has collected on it. “I just wanted to stop by and see how you are doing and see where your mind was at for tomorrow night.”
"Why would you care?” Billy fires back. He is ready to go toe to toe right now if need be.
“Because I do. I have been watching you know. Every saturday night I have been watching you. I was afraid you weren’t going to get it.” Steve slides his hand back in his pants pocket and steps up towards Billy.
Billy has a puzzled look on his face. "Get what?”
Steve stops a couple of feet in front of Billy and leans down towards him. Steve standing at seven feet four inches has to do that a lot. “Get that you have a mean streak in you and it was begging for you unleash it.” Steve stands back up. “What you think is you being focused is actually just what hides beneath that surface. I tried to bring that out in you but you fought me the whole time. I needled you. I poked you. I hit you. I took away your car.”
It’s all flashing back to Billy all of the crap Steve did to him.
“Busted up your Still. Took away your paycheck. Kept your merch money. Kept you away from the big dollar matches...like Monster Max, Caleb Hart to name a few. Hell you were lucky I even let you get in the ring against Josh Eagles in Japan. And when we came back from Japan, you weren’t ready for that rematch either but you just kept running your mouth so why not let Josh bitch slap you. Oh?” Steve sees the look on BIlly’s face. Steve smirks.
“Eagles did come to me about that match. He was tired of you running your mouth so the puppy needed to be swatted with a rolled up newspaper.” Steve lets that sink in for a second. He slowly starts to walk around the shop glancing at this and that. Billy glances down at the floor and remembers what Eagles said leading up to that rematch. He remembers Eagles saying he asked for that match just to shut him up…..
“You know, I saw your cousin the other day.”
Billy’s cousin Yugo, aka Spotter from Racin’ Tyme who was taken out of action when Steve dumped him on his head.
“I was glad to see that he’s up and about like his old self. I was worried that I really did hurt the kid. We talked you know. Talked about you, what I did to him. I think he understood why I did what I did to him. You should call him you know. He does miss you.”
Billy glances at Steve and looks away from him. He’s not saying a word as Steve slowly walks around his race car.
“All of the crap I used to do to you Billy, in hopes of you seeing just who you truly are inside. I didn’t want that match you know. Our little ladder match but I knew if I was going to able to unleash that beast inside of you, the only place that was going to happen was inside that ring and against me. I didn’t want to leave the UWL….but you know.”
Steve has circled all the way back around to stand in front of Billy again. He shrugs.
“Sometimes you have to do something you don’t want to for the greater good. I wish you could have seen that look in your eyes when you were standing on top of the ladder and saw me standing on the outside of the ring. That’s when it happened you know. That’s when the darker, more focused as you call it Nascar Billy was born. When you pushed off that ladder and nailed me with that drop kick…...I couldn’t have been happier.”
Steve reaches out and slaps Billy on his shoulder and then squeezes it.
“Then when you took me, and drapped me over that guard rail. You remember that?”
Billy nods.
“I was just praying to god that you wouldn’t chicken out and not go along with it but when you picked me up and nailed me with that pile driver.” Steve pats Billy on the shoulder again.
“I’ll be honest. I cried a little. I cried not because I lost the match and I was going to be gone from the UWL, but because you dug down and let the real Nascar Billy out. That monster inside you was unleashed….” Steve taps Billy on the chest a couple of times with his fist “And it was beautiful.”
Steve slides his hands back in his pocket and steps past him again.
”You know he’s right don’t you?” Steve says he is slowly walking towards the back of the shop where there are no lights.
“Who is?” Billy says as he spins around. He can no longer see Steve.
Hardcore Comley. You know he’s right. Stop fighting it.”
Billy is looking around and he can’t spot Steve at all. Where he went is the back wall of the shop and now it sounds like Steve’s voice is coming from all around him.
Unleash the mean streak. Release the beast inside you. Show the world the monster inside…...show them your…….Chamber.”
And like that Steve is gone in the wind. Where did he go? Was he even there at all? Question we’ll never know as Billy was snapped out of the trance like state when Nanook spins around from staring at the side of his hauler where he head butted it and busted open his forehead.
”Jesus H Christ man! Are you deaf? Listen you need to grant Jessica a interview. You need to do this.” Nanook says to Billy.
It was right there…..Billy giving in and agree to it. The word Okay… is right there on the tip of his tongue, But instead Billy slowly shakes his head.
”No…..” and then he walks past Nanook himself and exits the garage.
Nanook spins around. ”What do you mean no? Get back here! BILLY!”
Fade out.
