Moving on
Knoxville Tennessee…..
The rumble from a Cummins Diesel truck rumbles as a 2015 Dodge Ram truck slowly pulls out of Billy’s race shop on the north end of the city. Attached to the rig is Billy’s race hauler that he used to haul his race car around, his Bicknell big block modified. When the truck and hauler is fully out of the shop Nascar Billy slowly wanders out of the doorway. The truck comes to a stop and a middle aged man comes walking around the front of the truck. He’s a slim looking hard working type of a guy, typical gear head.
”So when I drop this off I’ll be back for the other stuff. Okay?” He says as he walks up to Billy. Billy nods.
"That’s fine. Dunno if I’ll be here but the door will be unlocked. Everything in there is your anyways.”
”You sure about this? I read up on you some. This stuff seems to be your life.”
”Not anymore man. It’s time to move on.” Billy says as he glances up at the hauler one last time.
He dumped his whole race team for pennies on the dollars like most teams when they fold. He got rid of everything. The hauler, the two cars, tool boxes for the pits, tires, motors, rear ends, spare body panels, tons of parts, all of it. He even got rid of his old drag car, the 2014 Copo Camaro, even wrecked like it was it was scooped up real fast on Craigslist. He even sold his old beat up rusted out Chevy truck. Everything was sold.
The guy who bought most of the stuff nods and looks down at the ground and turns to face the hauler. ”It’s going to be weird to see Nascar Billy on TV….” The guy pauses because he caught himself saying something that isn’t true. Nascar Billy hasn’t been on TV anywhere in at least 2 to 3 months now. ”Well if we see you back on TV again it’ll be weird. That’s what I meant.”
”You said you had a boy who likes wrestling?” Billy asks.
”Yeah. Paul. He was watching you for a couple of weeks when you were on a couple of other shows with the mask on…..uhh DJR? Is that right? Boy loves his wrestling. I don’t know where he gets it from.”
”Hold on a sec.”
BIlly disappears in the shop and returns not even a minute later. In his hand is his white Racin’ Tyme helmet and a Sharpie in his hand. Billy scribbles his name on the side of the helmet and hands it to the guy.
”Here give him this. I’m done with that too. No more DJR. No more Racin’ Tyme.”
The guy takes it. ”Really?”
”Yeah. I’m done with it.”
”With the helmet? Or wrestling all together?”
Billy looks at the guy for a second or two debating on how to answer that question. He knows if he gives this guy a solid answer as to what his future plans are, it could be on the dirt sheets in a matter of hours. Just so it isn’t awkward and that this guy paid cash for everything at the price Billy was asking for he throws the guy a bone.
”With Racin’ Tyme. Put a fork in it. It’s done.”
”Really? People seem to like it.”
”Well it’s not the same without my cousin and Joe……” Billy pauses. What about Joe? What does he say? ”He’s not a gearhead you know so he was out of place. It just didn’t work.”
The guy nods. ”I can see that. Well, like I said. Thanks for everything and I’ll be back to get the rest of it in a while. Okay?”
They shake hands.
”No problem. Take care.”
As he starts to walk away. ”You too.”
He pulls away and Billy’s phone dings letting him know he has a message. He checks his phone, a message from Nanook telling him they need to meet.
