Security guard is making his way down the cell block with a stack of letters in his hands. Prisoners that are leaning up against the steel bars of their jail cell doors are cat calling, talking smack as the guard makes his way towards the end of the block where one cell is left open. The guard stands in the door of the cell of the drops the stack of letters on the floor just inside cell.
“Mail call! F*ck nut.” The guard says before shaking his head and walking away.
Inside the cell is Bester. He is sitting on the edge of his bed and he wipes the tears from his check with the back of his hand. He slowly stands ups, shoulders slumped over and a sad look on his face. Wearing Spongebob PJ’s and fuzzy bunny slippers he slowly shuffles over to the pile of letters on the floor. Looking like he has the weight of the world on him he slowly bends over and picks up the mail. He slowly spins on his heels and shuffles his feet back to the bed, where he throws himself down on the bed.
Bester sighs.
”Sparky…..” he mumbles to himself. Sparky has been on the run for a couple of week snow and Bester is not himself. More than the FBI and Detective Adams, Bester wants Sparky to get caught and he is hoping that maintaining his “room” in prison will encourage Sparky to return to him. Time will tell on this but in the meanwhile Bester spends his day crying and sobbing and just being heartbroken. The only reprieve he gets from this is when he gets mail.
Bester picks up the first letter. From his lawyer.
”Not now lawyer man. Not now!” Bester growls and tosses the letter on the floor.
The next 2 letters are bills which end up on the floor as well but the last letter makes Bester groan.
”Oh not again! Listen! I don’t care who you are….”
Glances at the address on the letter.
”Nanook. I just don’t care! Go away! Can’t you see that I’m dying here!”
Betser crumbles up the letter and tosses it towards the cell door and once he threw it, Bester sits up. Standing in the cell doorway is Detective Adams. He sighs himself only because he can’t stand Bester and if he could find anything to pin on Bester for the murders he would in a heartbeat.
Bester stands up and starts rubbing his hands together, not looking for a fight but a nervous twitch he has.
”Detective Adams Sir. Have you found my kitty Sparky? Are you here to return Sparky to me?”
Adams kneels down and picks up the letter Bester tossed. He crumbles it. “Unfortunately no. I have not found your….cat.”
Sad face from Bester and his shoulders dip low. He looks at the floor looking every hope of being reunited with his cat has just been ripped from his soul.
“But” Adams says and this pearks Bester up. “I have info on where he is.”
Taking a step towards Adams who instantly puts his hand up. ”Where is he? Can I help?”
“You can help Bester.”
”How?”
“By talking to this guy.” Adams says and holds the letter out towards Bester. Bester looks at it and looks up at Adams with a look of despair on his face.
”I don’t know understand Detective Adams Sir? How will Nanook help me, help you find Sparky?”
“Nanook….tells me he knows where your cat is.”
The look of hope fills Bester’s face.
“This young lady has found your cat….” Adams says as Bester shows some concern on his face. “This guy, Nanook thinks he can get Sparky back but as you know, if he tries to pick up the cat.”
”Bad things will happen to him.”
“Correct. But you can pick up the cat.”
”I can. Sparky loves me and I love Sparky.”
“And Nanook can help you with your defense fund for Sparky.”
Bester glances at the “tip jar” which is on a small round table by the cell door. He taped a picture of Sparky on it and is asking for change to help prove the cat’s innocence. He is willing to spend everything he has to save his cat, but the “keeper of the trust fund” is not allowing Bester to empty out his trust fund to defend his cat.
”Yeah?”
“Talk to him Bester. At least put him on your visitor list.”
Adams holds the letter out towards Bester and Bester slowly takes the letter. Bester looks at the letter and at Adams.
”Okay.”
“Thanks Bester.”
Adams leaves and Bester holds the letter up and for the first time in weeks, there is hope of being reunited with his beloved cat……..
