Bester Freund is looking into the camera looking like a lost sheep. He’s sitting down by the looks of it in a nondescript room.
”Now just look into the camera and answer these three questions.” Nanook says off camera.
”Why?” Bester asks.
”Because this is selling yourself. Promoting the match. Getting the fans out there on the world wide web to cheer for you, to back you as you get ready to face Autumn Raven this weekend.”
Nanook hands Bester a sheet of paper. Bester reads it over.
”I still don’t get this. Why can’t I just show up Saturday and fight Autumn Raven? Why do I have to talk about it? What am I going to say? How I’m going to put her in a headlock so tight that her head is going to explode as if it was a pimple on my back or something? I’m just not getting it.”
”You have to give the fans a reason to watch. That is the key Bester. You want to make them get emotionally invested in not only you but your match against Autumn. This is your first ever match. Your pro wrestling debut! You only get to do this once. Without the fans either cheering or booing you….”
”Why would they boo me?”
”Because they don’t like you for whatever reason.”
”What’s the reason? They don’t know me so how can they not like me?”
”And that’s why you’re going to cut a promo as they say, and answer those three questions, so they, the fans, your fellow wrestlers in the lockerroom and management can get to know you.”
”oh….”
Bester reads the 3 questions again.
”So I just answers these questions?”
”Yes.”
”Can I have a pen?”
”For what?”
”Pencil?”
”You don’t need a pen or a pencil.”
”Marker? Crayon?”
”You don’t need any of that.”
”Well how am I going to answer the questions then? And you could have left more space between the questions. Just so you know I’m going to answers them on the back.”
”NO! Speak into the camera. Whatever you were going to write down as your answers, just say it here.”
Nanook’s hand points to the camera. Bester looks into the camera. Bester looks unsure.
”Trust me. Everyone does this. Remember the videos I showed you online?”
”Yeah?”
”It’s time for a Bester video.”
Bester glances down at his sheet of paper with the three questions and looks back up at the camera. He looks nervous.
”Be yourself and answer them honestly. Don’t blow any smoke or BS your way through this and you’ll be fine. It’ll be good. I promise you.”
”Well okay….”
”Whenever you’re ready.”
”hmmmm”
Question #1.
Who is Bester Freund?
”So….I’m Bester Freund. I’m from Flagstaff Arizona. Born and raised. I played football in high school in the fall and in the winter I wrestled. Coach said I’m like a mountain of a man, freakishly strong he said but to be honest I don’t know what that means. One of the few times growing up I left home, it was to go to Arizona State to play football. I got a scholarship? I didn’t understand it either but I got to go to college for free as long as I kept my grades up and I took classes like hiking, painting class and that was the first time I saw a naked girl. I took a class on how to play golf and I’m not very good at that. Cooking class and I even took classes on helping out in the stables with the horses. I liked that. I like animals in general, I have a cat. His name is Sparky. He’s this sweet loveable orange striped tiger cat. He’s awesome. He’s my best buddy in the whole wide world.”
“After 4 years of college they said I was done. I couldn’t play football no more for them. This magazine named me the best linebacker in the NCAA…..I have a award in my bedroom on a shelve. It’s shinny. After college I went to this combine? I never heard of it before and that was my first trip to New York City. There was a bunch of people there all curious on how fast I can run, how high I can jump. They even measured my hands and arms and stuff. Afterwords I was told that I could be drafted. Drafted to what? I asked and they all laughed at me. That made me sad. So I went home. I missed Sparky and he missed me. Then one day the phone rang and this guy named Ted told me that the Arizona Cardinals signed me as a undrafted free agent. I didn’t even know what that meant! All I know was that they gave me this check for like twenty five thousand dollars and told me to show up at camp!”
“I always wanted to go to camp! I like camping. And the Arizona Cardinals were paying me to go to camp! How awesome is that!”
Bester frowns.
”This wasn’t the type of camp I was expecting. It was hot. It was hard work. The coach was yelling at me the whole time. I had this big book of plays to learn and I stayed up all night and remembered all of those plays. I thought I was going to getting yelled at the next day when I made some changes to some of the plays but the coach said I did a good job and that he never thought of that play before! That made me feel good. Before I knew it, it was September and I was in training camp! I spent that season on something called the practice squad? All I know is that I got to practice with the team, and go to the games with them and everything. It was great. You know I did that for two years and then one day, they said I was going to play on Sunday! I know! Sunday!”
Bester smiles
”I got to play on Sunday like two or three times then one day I got this shooting pain in my knee. It hurt. It hurt alot. I had to go see a doctor and he said something about a ACL tear? I still have no idea what that means. I googled that one day not too long ago and oh….my...god….there is gory pictures on google about that ACL tear! It scared me. All I know is that I took a nap one day in the hospital and woke up and my knee was all good! I mean, it hurt like H E double hockey sticks but the doctors and there were a couple of them all seem to be happy. All I know is that I spent the next year working on my knee. Now it feel like brand new!”
“When I got cleared…..by another doctor? I decided that I didn’t want to play football again. That Ted guy from the combine who was awful interested in my money that the Cardinals were paying me and before you ask, I don’t know how much money I was getting paid. I never saw the checks. I let Jerry at the bank handle all of that. Jerry has been handling my saving account that my grandpa set up for me when I was a itty bitty boy. Ted didn’t like Jerry and I don’t know why. Jerry is always very nice to me. He gives a bottle of water and a cookie every time I stop in to see him.”
Bester pauses.
”Where was I? Oh yes. Ted was very upset that I wasn’t going to play football no more. But I missed my kitty cat. It’s tough playing football. Getting on that airplane 16 times during the season plus how ever many times we have to get on the plane during training camp. I don’t like heights. I haven’t seen Ted since I stopped playing football.”
Bester nods.
”So…..till I meet Nanook, I spent my time at home with Sparky till he was a bad kitty and got into trouble which I don’t want to talk about right now if that is okay. Nanook talked to me one day and said that I could be a star in wrestling. I remember watching that Stone Cold Steve Austin in college and even though he has a potty mouth he was awesome. I wrestled in highschool and that was fun so Nanook said that I could make money for Sparky, who, as I said is a bad kitty right now and Nanook sent me to New York City to work with this guy who is like, all tattooed up. He’s kinda scary if you ask me and then I had to get on a plane again and go to England and work with this guy who’s first name is Mad…..but he was a nice guy so like why is his name Mad? I don’t know. I’m confused. Anyways here I am. I am going to have my first match as a pro wrestler against Autumn Raven! I’m excited. I’m nervous.”
Bester looks up past the camera, most likely at Nanook.
”How was that?”
”Good! That was real good! How about we move on to the second question?”
Bester nods.
”Oh okay.”
”Now just look into the camera and answer these three questions.” Nanook says off camera.
