”OH…..MY…...GOD!”
A wide eyed and very, very happy Bester fills the screen. He’s standing up with his phone in his hand streaming the Ellen Degeneres Show. Nanook who is also thumbing through his phone looks up and looks at Bester with a “The hell?” Look on his face.
”What’s up Bester?” Nanook asks.
”IT’S CAT APPRECIATION WEEK!!!!!!!!”
"What?” Nanook again asks not knowing what he is talking about.
”On Ellen! It’s kitty cat appreciation week! I need to talk a selfie with Sparky! This is going to be a AWESOME WEEK NANOOK! JUST AWESOME!”
Nanook nods. "Yes it is. Yes it is.”
Bester jogs off with his phone to snap a quick selfie with his beloved cat……………
"3 weeks. 3 matches. 3 victories. That is what this guy right here…..”
Nanook pats Bester on his back who is standing next to him in front of a UWL banner.
"Has done here in the UWL, in his career. Now, don’t take what I just said that this man right here, this bright eyed and bushy tailed ball of energy is the next coming of Caleb Hart.”
”Who’s that?”
"Only the greatest athlete to ever step in a UWL ring…”
Nanook holds up his finger.
"Next to the one, the only, the man, Mister Joker’s Wild, The UWL Triple Crown Champion and someone who as far as I know is also undefeated in his second stint in the UWL, Drew Stevenson. He is Bester, as close to a wrestling god as you can get.”
”Really?”
"Drew Stevenson…..he isn’t just good. He’s great. He’s not just a legend. He’s a icon. He’s a trendsetter. He is where the bar is set and everyone who fails to even reach that bar set by him is merely a mere mortal. If someone was going to write a bible of professional wrestling, Drew Stevenson would be Jesus.”
”So he’s a carpenter?”
Nanook smirks, he places his hand on Bester’s shoulder and looks down at the floor for a second. He looks at Bester.
"When you are in a hardware store and you’re looking for a jigsaw…..”
”Yeah?”
"What brand would you buy?”
”uhhhhh….Porter Cable?”
Nanook shakes his head no.
”Dewalt?”
"Guess again.”
”Milwaukee?”
"Try Skill because that is what our Triple Crown Champion Drew Stevenson has, skills. Mad skills.”
”Oh”
"Bester, this week, you’re not facing some bum. Some guy who can’t figure you out. A piece of trash who doesn’t take you seriously. No, this week you get to face the big time. The top dog. The face of the company. The champion. The picture of perfection and every other metaphor we can throw out there as you get a taste of the main event when you face Drew Stevenson in a non title match.”
”Really?”
"Yes and listen. I don’t want to freak you out. Relax, breathe and remember. He is just a man who puts his pants like everyone one else out there. Drew can be beaten. Drew has been beaten, it’s been a while but it can and has happen. I know you are on cloud nine with your fantastic start here in the UWL but the cold hand of reality is about to slap you across the face of yours because Drew Stevenson doesn’t care who you are. He doesn’t care why you are here. All Drew Stevenson cares about is that you have just stepped in the ring with him and it is his mission to beat you.”
”This is the worst pep talk of all time Mister Nanook.”
"It’s suppose to be! This isn’t a pep talk, a slap on the ass, me telling you you got this in the bag. This is setting the groundwork that this week’s match against the Champ is going to be the hardest match of your career…..”
”But this is only my fourth match.”
"Exactly! This is the biggest and hardest match of your career! You are about to skip several rungs on the ladder and move all the way to the very tippy top of that thing! And Bester, once you are at the very top, top of the mountain, there is only one direction to go and what direction is that?”
Bester thinks about that.
”hmmm down?”
"Correct! Now the only question I have is, out of the two of you in that ring Saturday Night in Gainesville, which one of you is going to send the other guy all the way down that ladder?”
Nanook stares Bester in the eye and after a couple of second slowly turns and walks away. Bester mulls over the question in his noggin for a second or two.
”I have this feeling….”
Bester begins and he turns towards the camera.
”That when the line up for this week’s show came out, I’m sure there were was plenty of you out there in twitterville who laughed. You pointed and said. “Would you look at that! Drew gets another freebie match! The UWL is protecting him once again!” I can’t help but think that. On one hand you have Drew himself, who’s list of accolades is a mile long and in the other hand you have me. Mister 3 matches under my belt Bester Freund. It’s one sided. Lopsided. If Vegas was going to place odds on this match, I would be a very very very long shot and I totally get it. I’m not mad about that, I’ve only had three matches in my career but what grind my gears is this notion that I am going to simply lay down for the Champ. Like I’m going to just accept my fate in this matchup and spare everyone the 20, 30 minutes this match might last and just get to final three seconds of the match with Drew pinning me. It still might happen. I have to be realistic, at some point I will lose a match or two. It’s bound to happen, but I’m not going down without a fight!”
Bester shifts his weight from his right to his left.
”Someone somewhere in the UWL must have noticed what I have done so far in the UWL and they want to test me. Push me and I’m up for the challenge. Win or lose, I’m bringing the fight! I’m going to take everything I know, everything I have learned and use it to try and beat Drew Stevenson. In my short time here in the UWL, watching from afar it seems to me that not everyone seems to bring their best against the champ! They are defeated before they hit the ring! But not me! Not Bester Freund! I’m a fighter! I will do what some of you refuse to do when pitted against Drew Stevenson! I will bring my all! My Best! It might not be enough….but, you never know.”
Bester with a stern look.
”Maybe it will be. Like it or not Drew. You’re about to have new buddy in your life whether you like it not!”
