Sunday morning…..
Somewhere in a RV park in America…..
The door to the RV opens and Sutton slowly steps off of the RV……
His CAT Workboots touching the moist ground.
His laces that are undone start to soak in the moisture from the stones…..
Sutton’s jeans are unbuttoned and he’s not wearing a shirt.
Yes it’s nippy outside. It’s October after all.
In his hand is a coffee mug.
Sutton walks over to the fire pit that is like 12 feet from the RV. He glances down at the coals that are smoldering and takes a sip of his coffee.
He kicks them with his boot. He kneels down. Sets his cup on the ground and picks up some kindling wood and places it on the coals and stirs them up to catch the kindling on fire.
Sutton ”Oh yeah...der we go.”
A small fire quickly sparks up. Sutton feeds it and after a couple of minutes has a small little fire going. He picks up his coffee cup and stands up. He takes a deep breath and we notice the hickeys on his traps and shoulders. One would guess that Lilly Mae is a biter. It was a celebration last night as Sutton and Lilly haven’t seen each other in over a month while he was in rehab again.
Sutton steps over to a couple of lawn chairs and between them is a table. He sets his coffee cup down on the table.
Sutton ”Four years now. I have been in this sport. The last year has been by far the most difficult year I have had. Troubles around every corner it feels like and yeah, I’ve got no one to blame but myself. The warning signs were there. I ignored what the old timers were telling me. Slow down kid. Take a step back. Put that bottle down.”
Sutton reaches in his back pocket and pulls out a can of chew. Grizzly long cut wintergreen.
Sutton ”You’re going to burn yourself out. You can drink that much and be successful.”
Sutton taps the top of the chew can.
Sutton ”Now I know that they were right. I hate to admit it but they were and it only cost me a year of my career. Which….”
Sutton pops open the can of chew. Takes a pinch of chew.
Sutton ”In the big picture is nothing.”
Sutton pulls his bottom lip out and stuff his lip. He rubs his fingers together to get the extra bits of chew off his fingers and snaps the top back on the can.
Sutton ”But I wanted it. I wanted it all. Like, really bad. I couldn’t help it, I couldn’t stop it. I had a lot to learn and I took on matches that got me in over my head but when you’re my age you don’t have the thought process of, F that nonsense. I’m going to beat that f*cker’s ass you know. OH…….oh how I was so wrong. The losses mounted. The mountain of crap that piled up in front of me was just too much to shovel out of my way. I started to feel like I was being mistreated. Taken advantage of. And that stuff with Steve….”
Sutton spits and runs his thumb over his forehead. He chuckles.
Sutton ”Yeah that didn’t help either. Man when I stop and think about it…..It’s amazing that I’m even here. Here in the NAW.”
Sutton place his hands on his hips.
Sutton ”My name is Sutton. You can call me Sutton. Billy. HillBilly Sutton. Nascar Billy, hell I don’t care. My great uncle is Popcorn Sutton and if you don’t know who that is better break out your little phone, put your girly drinks down and google what a real American is. Like my name sake, I make my own shine. I started out in the woods like Pop and brew my own stuff. I have since gone legal. You can walk into in any liquor store and find my stuff on the shelf and it’s a highly competitive category to be in but my brand, Redneck Remedy is one of the top sellers. My success in Shine has afforded me some pleasures in life. Like this RV behind me. I used to have a house and sh*t but I gave that stuff up for the open road. That is my home and where I park at night is where I call home. I used to have race cars, big block DIRT modified, Sprint cars. Hell I had a COPO Camaro drag car for a while. But I gave all of that up. I had so much cash that it was burning a hole in my pocket and boy I spent it. I bought all sorts of silly sh*t you know. Toys. Girls.”
Sutton slowly nods.
Sutton ”Yeah I had it all including an endless supply of drink. I started making Shine like everyone else does for the money. I was 18, just got back from England which is where Nanook sent me for my training. I was in Canada working in this sh*thole making nothing before I found my way to Knoxville and got on with a bigger promotion. The pay checks where better you know, but not good enough. So I set up my own still and went to work. One thing lead to another. I won some tag titles and started selling my brand at the shows to make some extra cash. It snowballed. Money started flowing in.”
Sutton spits.
Sutton ”You know how it goes. I was no one and then through hard work and some lucky breaks I became one of the stars there. Two runs with the tag straps and you know I’m a household name. Demand for my Shine increased because I was a success in that ring. I opened up my distillery and went legal. No more late nights in the woods. I hired guys to make my sh*t. It took off and I found my self flushed with cash and that is when it all went down hill.”
Sutton sighs.
Sutton ”Both of my tag partners retired. One due to injury and the other because after 15 years he was tore up. Der I was at the height of my stardom, a hot commodity and I’m like, Hell yeah time to rule the singles competition! I won tag straps like it was nothing you know. How hard could it be to run up the ladder as a solo act.”
Sutton chuckles.
Sutton ”Yeah. When you’re 22 and on top of the world you think you’re indestructible. No one can stop you. Boy was I wrong. I never did win gold again but that sort of thing is hard to do when you’re drinking the pain and sorrow away. And man did I learn the hard way how quickly those fans out there can turn on you. I also learned that they don’t like you when you slap them around.”
Sutton picks up his coffee cup and takes a sip.
Sutton ”I think Nanook is right that I needed to move on from where I was. A fresh start in many ways. No shine running through my veins clouding my judgment. No same faces sitting atop of the mountain mocking me, pushing me around saying “You’re good kid, you can be great but not while I’m here.”
One more sip.
Sutton ”North Atlantic Wrestling is my home now and I know none of you SOB’s know me, care about me. You just see me as another new face showing up to the party and talking a boat load of BS. Whatever I say will fall on deaf ears because I haven’t proved sh*t here. I haven’t done sh*t here. I get it. I’m not going to stand here and call out the champs and say some retarded sh*t like you’re only keeping that belt warm for me because I’ll be coming for it real soon. I’ve won wherever I’ve been and that trend isn’t going to stop now. To tell you the truth I haven’t even taken the time to look up who is holding gold in the NAW. Right now none of that matters to me. Right now I only have one goal. It’s a personal goal. A selfish goal. You see of the last two years while being drunk out of my mind I have been trying to prove that I belong in singles competition. As you can guess that hasn’t worked out so well for me.”
Sutton crosses his arms and spits.
Sutton ”It’s been a rough road that I have been trying to pave for myself. It’s time to start over and I’m going to pick up a can of spray paint and walk out to middle of the road and spray me a line across the highway. That is the starting line and in 500 laps it’ll be my finish line. You see, I love NASCAR. I love to plant my ass in front of the TV on Sundays and watch cars go around in a circle. If you taken the time to watch a race and get all nerdy with the mechanics of the car, you know you need a good set up to find speed on that track. You have to turn in the corners, glide down the straightaways and be able to pass cars anywhere on that tract. High, low, in the middle. You need perfect handling, good traction and you can’t get any of that without paying attention to the details. Those guys on the pit crews. They ain’t drunk. That’s what I need to be. Not drunk. So this week. I’m in the starting grid waiting for the start of the race. I’m going to lay down the best lap I can first time out. Set the tone for the next lap, and the lap after that and every lap to follow. Todd Morrison. You’re starting right in front of me.”
Sutton spits.
Sutton ”And that green flag is about to drop and I’m going to be perfectly honest here. I’m gonna slam you in the bumper and hit you in the right rear and spin your silly ass out and if you’re lucky, you won’t hit the wall and tear your ride up that will end your day early and have the scorekeeper slap a DNF next to your name. If you can gather it back up and point it in the right direction you better be ready because on lap 2…..yeah I’m going to be right there again, this time passing you putting you a lap down and just out of spite, I might sideswipe you and forcibly put you in the wall. I’m here to do what I set out to do two years ago. Make a name on my own. I’m going to pick off each and every single one of you one match at a time. I’m not here to conquer the NAW overnight. I’m going to build a empire, a empire to last a 1000 years…..”
Sutton scoops the chew out of his bottom lip and flicks it in the fire. He spits yet again.
Sutton ”There is many other cleshay sh*t I can say but I think you get my jist. I’m here to make a name for self and win some gold and in the doing so, put my career back on track. The winning track. I will find myself back in the winner's circle soon enough and Todd, you’ll be the first who will walk into that locker room and tell the other guys that Sutton is for real. That boy isn’t messing around.”
Sutton picks up his coffee cup.
Sutton ”By the time I’m done. I will make the NAW….”
Sutton takes a sip.
Sutton ”Mine.”
Fade out.
