Late at night in the parking lot of Denver Coliseum and the RV has been fired up and is warming up as Lilly and Sutton are getting ready to hit the road. When ever she has to drive the RV Lilly wears a old Peterbilt trucker hat that her dad wore when he was a truck driver. It’s her thing and she has the old, beat up, stained hat on ready to hit the highway when Nanook waddles over to the RV. Nanook will not be riding in the RV.
“Well?” He says. Sutton closes the hatch to the lower storage compartment on the RV and turns. Fresh from his victory over Luke Savage, Sutton smirks and high fives Nanook.
“I told you this was the place to come to. The place that will give you a fair shake, a fair shot. No BS. No drama. No politics. They will look at the results and reward you according.”
“Yeah you were right. You were right and dat is why I pay you.”
“Good things are ahead for you my friend. Good things. The NAW Horizon championship is almost your waist.”
“And it’s going to look fantastic.” Lilly adds as she slides her hand around Sutton’s waist and gives him a kiss.
“Don’t embarrass me babe.” Sutton says.
“I love to see you squirm.”
Nanook’s phone chirps and he looks down at it.
“Okay kids. I’ve got to run. I’ll see you in Glendale.”
“Yeah...see you there.” Sutton says as Nanook walks away and Lilly and him kiss one more time.
Sutton taps on the lid of his can of chew. He pops open the top and takes a pinch. He pulls out his bottom lip and stuffs the left side of his jaw. He snaps the lip back on his can and slides the can in his back pocket of his Wrangler jeans and rubs his fingers together to remove excess chew from them. He enjoys the first couple of seconds of nicotine injection he just received as he leans up against the grill of his RV.
“I don’t know if anyone put one and one together last night…” Sutton begins with placing his one foot on the bumper of his RV.
“But right after I planted Luke Savage in that mat. After I knock his head off his neck, Edric stood up and declared that I am in the fight for the NAW Horizon Championship at Holiday Fear next month and from where I’m standin’....”
Sutton cracks his knuckles.
“Dat was just his way of sayin’ Thanks! A huge thank you for shuttin’ dat guy up! So Edric…..you’re welcome. I’ve never heard of Luke Savage prior to me punting his head between the uprights but dat guy is nothing but a headache fer ya and it was my pleasure to do for ya. But enough about Luke.”
Sutton leans forward a tad and spits out some ‘bacca juice.
“Der is only one name standing between me and my shot at the Horizon championship, the only reason why I came here, to get a legit shot at championship gold and dat name is Dan Hawkins. Now I spent some time on da phone googling who in the bloody blue hell Dan Hawkins is and the darndest thing happened. Google asked me who Dan Hawkins was. You could imagine my surprise when my phone asked me who I’m beating next. And make no mistake about it…”
“I’m beatin’ you Dan. I know that they sold this match as your chance to beat me….”
Sutton chuckles.
“But to get a shot at the Horizon championship. Talk about the ultimate throw a dog a bone moment but that is all this match is going to be for you. A chance to get back on TV. A chance to get back in the ring. A chance to show Edric why he should keep you on the payroll and a chance to show your mom that you’re still alive. But that’s all it’s going to be. A reminder to a very select few that you’re still alive. That you’re trying to live the dream….but next week, that dream of yours, will become a nightmare. This big return of yours to the NAW ring will be short lived. Some lame duck like you….”
Sutton leans forward and spits.
“You ain’t beaten me. I will make short work of you. I will show Edric and the rest of the stiffs in that locker room why they are looking at the next Horizon champion and yeah, that belt.”
Sutton pushes himself off of the grill of the RV.
“Will be mine.”
Fade out.
