Chamber’s truck pulls up in the parking area to the area where the IWA is holding a huge sold out live show. Chamber steps out of the truck, fans have lined the rail way and all have spotted the superstars arriving in the private garage. Everyone is here, except for Scorpion, who is not a superstar. The place erupts with cheers as Chamber grabs his bag and shuts the door to his truck. Everyone gets excited when the stars are in town. But right now, Chamber stands there and thinks.
“This time last year, they would boo me, now, they love me.”
That’s the funny part about wrestling, one minute hated, the next loved, and soon after that, forgotten about. A few of the fans yell and hold out t shirts and other crap for Chamber to sign. He walks over to the group with his bag on his shoulder. He starts with the younger ones first. They hold out mags, pic’s, video’s like Chamber and Wilburman volume one. As well as fake IWA title belts and just pieces of paper. The walking wall walks up to them and pulls a marker out of pocket. A little one of 3 holds up a picture of Chamber. Chamber scribbles his name on it and hands it back. And one right after another, and Chamber signs one, one right another.
“Guys gunna have fun tonight?” Chamber asks as he signing shit. A kid in the back, who must be a huge fan yell out “YEAH!”
“That’s good.”
“You gunna kick Scorpion’s ass!” Another asks. Chamber looks up in the general direction wondering who said that so he can look who ever in the eye and answer them. But, looks no one is jumping up and down saying they asked the question, which never does happen anyways.
“Oh yeah. You can bet on that.” Chamber says to answer the question.
“You gunna beat Wilburman at the pay per view?” Another asks.
“Yeah, don’t I always?” Chamber replies with which gets a few chuckles. “Okay guys, Time for me to go to work.” Chamber adds which is meet with a few grumbles. “After the show, okay?”
“Okay...I guess” A kid says. Chamber smiles and starts to make his way to the back entrance door when he faintly hears someone saying “asshole...”
A few minutes later Chamber is seen walking towards his locker room when two twin midgets run up to him and stop in front of him, looking up at him. Chamber stops and looks down at them.
“Well, look who it is.” Chamber says.
“Yes.”
“It is”
“Us”
“How”
“Are you”
“Today fine”
(Together) “Sir?”
Chamber drops his bag to the ground, gets down on one knee and starts to open it. He starts to dig around in side of it.
“I’m glad you guys found me, I have something for you to take back to Donnie. Tell him I don’t want it.” Chamber says as he pulls out the Tag Title and hands it to the midget on the left. They look at it, look at him.
“But”
“Why?”
“Cause, That’s why.” Chamber says
“Okay”
“But our Boss”
“Won’t be happy with this.”
“Well...He’ll just have to live with it.” Chamber says. The twins look at each other one last time and then start to walk away.
“Okay, Bye” They say as the fade away in the distance. Chamber zips up his bag and starts to make his way to his locker room once again. He finally makes it there. He opens the door and walks inside the cold empty room. He sets his bag down on the chair and walks over to the mirror. Chamber reaches into his pocket and pulls out a knife. He starts to cut the bandages on his hand. When done, He tosses the bandage off to the side. He holds the hand up to his eyes. In the reflection of the light coming off the mirror, it lights up his hand. The back of it is some what better, no longer black but a healthy pink. The palm of the hand is bright red, bloody and has puss running out of the cracks that just won’t heal. Chamber eyes the remains of his hand. So close to losing it he was, thankful he didn’t. Chamber bends his fingers downward. The popping and cracking sounds of dead skin is heard. Small flakes pop off as his fingers draw closer to his palm. The pain shoots up his arm and registers on his face. His brow crunches up and covers a bit of his eye. Chamber then opens his hand up. He turns the inside of his hand towards him, and each inside joint is fresh with blood. The craving to crack his knuckles grow immense right now. Blood runs down his fingers and all join in his palm, then from there start to run down his arm when there is a knock at the door. Chamber quickly runs his hand under water and wraps it with a towel.
“It’s open!” He says. The door opens and in walks his uncle. Chamber stands there surprised.
“Hey now.” Green Man says.
“Ted.” Chamber says as it has been has been a while since he has seen him.
“How’s things going?”
“Okay.” Chamber says, Green Man see’s his hand all wrapped up, he has heard of the injury.
“Is that so.” Green Man says as he starts to wonder around the room.
“Yeah, why? What brings you here anyways?”
“Oh, I dunno. Maybe I had to see for myself.”
“See what for yourself. Is retirement that boring?”
“Yeah. I guess it is. But then again, is the crap I see on TV week after week.” Green Man says as he stops and faces Chamber. “Two weeks ago, you lost a match that you should have won, Last week was a poor excuse of a match. And this week, I hope to see better. I mean, I’ll be there live after all.”
“So what do you want? Free tickets or something?”
“No. No, nothing like that.” Green Man pauses. “SO! Tell me, is this weeks match going to be another dog match?”
“Dog match?”
“Yeah, Another something that is supposed to look like a match. That’s all you’re doing out there. All these new guys are getting stronger, faster, younger. Maybe even smarter. While you, get older, slower. And don’t tell me your not. I’ve been there. 22 years you know. and as the years pasted, I had top step up, be a little more cleaver.”
Chamber cuts him off. “What is your point?!”
“Time for change. That’s all. If you don’t, you’ll be on the outside, looking in.”
“Change? Like hell......” Chamber says before Green Man cuts him off.
“OH yes! Just face the facts Steve. Your not the man you used to be. I see it, the fans see it. And you see it.” Green man says, who has always had a way of reaching his nephews. “Your gun ho days are behind you. Open your eyes, will ya, and for crying out loud, work with Donnie. Your days as being the one man wrecking crew is over with. And everyone knows that. A few years ago, Guys like Scorpion and Caligula would be dead when they faced you. But now, they have a chance. A chance to take some of your star power. Steve, I trained you like no one ever before. I saw you as me who never had the chance. And I’d hate to see you fade away to nothing because you couldn’t change with time. Your almost 30, that is like 70 in the wrestling world.” Green Man says as Chamber says nothing. “I remember watching match of you in which a chair shot would have no effect on you. I remember you sitting up after someone hit their finisher on you like it was nothing. But sadly, those days are over with. And, I don’t want to see you become a has been like the Flair’s, Hogan’s of the world. When the crowd begins to love you, it’s over my friend.”
Slowly, Chamber says “Is that so?”
“Look at me?” Green Man responds with. “I hit my prime at the end when I turned bad. But by then, it was too late.”
Chamber nods. Green Man looks at his watch. “Well, better let ya get back to your hand.” Green Man says as he starts to leave the locker room. Leaving Chamber all alone with his thoughts.
