It’s a dank rainy day in upstate NY and just inside the Adirondack park is a RV that has traveled much of it life in the southern states. It’s been clicking off the miles for the past 6 months and now for the first time in a long time it finds itself in the land of snow and ice.
Sutton is outside with a insulated flannel jacket on as he building a fire in the fire pit that hasn’t seen a fire since last fall. He’s kneeling down beside it, poking it with a stick as it catches on and grows without constant tending.
“I leave the south. I head up north cuz everyone told me dat is where the action is. Dat is where the money is at, the fame is at. Up north. The scene, it be exploding.” Sutton says as he spits. He has his bottom lip packed with some chew.
“So after the place I was at fizzled out on me, well more like wielded the doors shut overnight and didn’t tell anyone that the last show, was indeed the last show, I reached out to Lion’s Road wrestling and here I am. Made my debut the other night and next week, I’m getting my hands dirty and long and behold who is my opponent next week?”
Sutton lowers his head.
“Fucking Kris Slade. A name I hoped to never hear of again. A guy who all he did was whine and piss and moan about everything. I was so happy when he wasn’t booked cuz that there locker room was way quieter. So peaceful.”
“Lucky me! I get to exchange blows with Kris fucking Slade once again. Oh the joy! I can’t wait. But….”
Sutton nods.
“This will be the last time I ever have to see and hear from him again. You see Kris, since the last time our paths crossed a lot has changed. I’m not that guy from Knoxville who was a bit green, a drunk focused more on making my shine than anything else. I’m not that guy who was chasing any female with a pulse in the state of Tennessee. Nah. I found a good women. A girl I love. A girl I would die for. She’s my do or die bitch and I’m not that drunk anymore you might remember me as. Lillie Mae, well she kicked my ass one night and told me to sober up or that’s it and ever since then, it’s AA meetings, a stint or two in rehab and since November, this redneck hasn’t touched a drop of shine. I’m fully focused man and since then…..”
Spits.
“I haven’t lost a match. It’s a trend that we’ll see how much longer it lasts but I'm real certain that it’ll last one more week. I’m looking forward to this showdown. I’m looking forward to shutting you up once and for all. This is my debut match in Lion’s Road and I’m here to play for keeps. I’m here to add to my collection of gold belts. I’m here, like I said the other night, to make this place.”
Spits.
“Mine.”
Sutton stands up and tosses his poker stick on the campfire.
“You’re just a deadbeat who I’m going to beat so badly that the rest of guys in the back, they’ll take notice and see a guy who’s here for keeps. I’m not here to dance, to play games and waste everyone’s time. I will be the hardest working guy in that locker room and in short order, I will be at the top of the pile around here. My road down the Lion’s Road begins with me leaving you a bloody carcass in the ring….my ring. The sooner you understand that, the sooner the rest of you understand, the better. Until then, the beatings will continue.”
Spits.
“Got it Kris?”
