“Monkey?”
Scene opens up with Bester wandering around backstage at the OCW Arena with his flashlight in hand looking under everything for his stuffed baby monkey. He returned to the place where he last seen Monkey. The hallway outside of his locker room where Joe threw him down the hallway.
“Monkey? Monkey?”
Bester is looking in the doorways, around corners, everywhere, everywhere but under the vending machine where a shredded carcass of Monkey remains collecting dust.
“Where did you go?”
Bester is just about to give up as he stands in the middle of the hallway with his hands on his hips, looking lost. Just then the door behind Bester opens and slowly creeks ever so slightly open. Bester looks over his shoulder at the door.
“Monkey?”
Bester turns and slowly pushes the door open all the way. The room is completely dark inside.
“Hello? Monkey?”
Bester slowly enters the room and he feels around in the dark for the light switch on the wall that is normally by the door..
“Monkey? Where is the light switch? Monkey?”
Bester is following the wall with his hand, searching for that light switch and has worked a couple of feet into the dark room, a room that Bester has never been in. Just then the door slams shut.
“Monkey? Hello? This isn’t funny…..I’m scared.”
“I remember a time when you wouldn’t have been scared.” A voice says. Bester starts to panic.
“Who’s that? Can you turn on the light? This isn’t funny! I can’t see anything.”
“It’s time to let it go Bester.”
“Let go of what? Who’s there? Have you see Monkey?”
“Monkey is dead.”
“What? No?”
“He is. Your cat killed him.”
“.....no he didn’t.”
“Oh but he did. Old Sparky strikes again. That cat is a stone cold killer.”
“...no he’s not. He’s a good kitty.”
“Don’t believe me, whatever. I saw what I saw.”
“Spartacus wouldn’t kill Monkey. He loves Monkey.”
“You know what else I saw?”
“What?” Bester sounding like he’s fighting back tears.
“You beat the undefeated Mike Harrision for the Craze championship. You did this in May of last year. You remember that?”
“Kinda….”
“It was the first title you have ever won. How did that make you feel?”
“Well, (sniff) it felt great. No one thought I could beat Mister Harrision.”
“But you showed everyone that you could, didn’t ya?”
“I did.”
“So let me ask you, what has changed since then?”
“Uhm.” Bester says. We can’t see him since the room is completely dark but you know Bester is slowly curling up in a ball on the floor.
“You know. I heard you last week.”
“Heard? Heard me?”
“When Joe threw Monkey down the hallway, and Spartacuz ran out from under the vending machine in the hallway, and took Monkey, you said as Joe left, You don’t want to be me. I heard you.”
“Who are you?”
“God.”
“Really?”
“Yes. And I can help you.”
“Help me? How?”
“I can answer your request. I saw what you did earlier today. Helping John E Depth to his feet and throwing Shootah from the ring. That was very kind of you. You did a good deed, so you should be rewarded for that.”
“Okay?”
“Outside that door, waiting for you, are the items you seek. One to bring closure and another to help you be someone else. Someone, heroic.”
“Really?”
“Yes my child.”
In the dark, Bester slowly slides along the way till he reaches the door. He fumbles for the doorknob and gives it a turn, opening the door he finds on the floor a small casket with Monkey engraved on it and Bester’s OGDA mask. Bester’s eyes lights up!
“OH MY GOD! MY MASK!”
Bester drops to his knees and picks up the mask and hugs it. Bester looks back into the darkened room.
“Where did you find this? I thought I lost this forever!”
But there is no answer.
“Hello? Mister God? Hello?”
Silence from the room. Bester turns his attention to the small wooden casket. Bester carefully picks it up and holds it with both hands. He thinks about it for a second and then lifts the lid and takes a peek and quickly slams it shut. Bester turns his head and clenches his eyes as tight as he can.
“Mister God wasn’t lying. Poor Monkey. I am so sorry. I promise that I will find a resting place for you. I promise Monkey. I will always love you.”
Standing up, with the remains of Monkey in one hand, and in the other, his OGDA mask. Bester stares at the mask and nods.
“OCW needs it’s superhero back.”
And with that, Bester leaves. Once he is gone, Nanook slowly steps out of the office with a grin on his face.
On the laptop, on youtube playing is the Mike Harrision and OGDA match from May 1st 2018. The OCW Craze title was on the line and up till this match, Mike Harrision was a rising star in OCW. Undefeated, steamrolling over everyone. Unstoppable. Untouchable. Then it happened. OGDA, who know one knew, did the unthinkable. He put the champ down and won the Craze title, the first and only championship in Bester’s career.
Mike Harrision was never the same after that.
Neither was OGDA.
Monkey’s casket on the kitchen table while Spartacus is sitting on the floor looking at the table knowing that fucking Monkey is in that box.
In the bedroom is Bester. Standing in front of the mirror fresh from a shower after a good long hard workout at his gym. He has his MMA style gloves on and is wearing one of his smiley tees.
“Mister Jones tells me, that I am getting a chance to prove myself. Mister Jones texted me to let me that I am going to have a match at Not Safe For Work. That I can become the number one contender to the Craze title by winning a battle royal. As much as that sounds like something that I want, a chance to get that belt back. To show everyone that I was once a proud champion. I’m afraid that on the poster for NSFW, there is an error. It says that Bester will be in this over the top into the pool battle royal.”
Bester pauses for a minute. His cheeks starts to get red, a little teary eyed.
“Bester...Bester has a hole in his heart. A double hole. The love of my life, she left, left me high and dry. Broke my heart. More like shattered it. I opened up to her, poured my soul out to heart and told her things about my life I told no one else and what did she do? She took advantage of me, used me to scratch an itch and bolted in the middle of the night. I awoke to find an empty bed. Then there is Monkey. Who was a beam of light in the darkness that is my life falling apart around me. Monkey has gone to the big jungle in the sky. Bester...”
Slowly shakes his head.
“Bester is not ready for this battle royal match. Plus, the last time I was at the pool, all sorts of naughty things happened. I work up with no clothes on, two girls on top of me, also with no clothes on. A wicked headache. The urge to puke all day and, man my farts were dealy that day. So deadly that my kitty wanted nothing to do with me. No thanks. Never again. I’m not going back in a pool anytime soon. So, I’m here to tell you that I’m not ready for this match. Physically, mentally. Emotionally.”
Bester reaches down and picks up his OGDA mask.
“Despite what Mister Jones might be telling everyone. Despite what the poster says and what everyone is talking about on the internet between now and Monday night. Bester will not be in this match. Rather. A former Craze champion is returning to claim his crown.”
Bester slides on the OGDA match. He snaps his head side to side to snap his neck and he cracks his knuckles.
“They call me Orgulloso Guardián Del Arcoiris. I am a former Craze champion. I defeated Mister Harrison. Mister Harrison overlooked me, he took me for granted. But you know who didn’t? My Rainbow Warriors. They believed in me. They gave me the strength to overcome the odds and we shock the OCW.”
“True. That was a long time ago. 13 months in fact and the OCW 13 months is in a completely different place today. But...Mister God. He spoke to me. He told me that the OCW needs it’s superhero back. The OCW is in a dark place and needs saving. There is only one person who can save the OCW. Only one person who can lead the Rainbow Warriors back from the brink of extinction. Someone who won’t back down from the bullies. Someone who will fight back and strike a bully down! Someone, who will throw everyone in the pool. That person?”
Double thumb points at himself.
“OGDA. I’m back! I’m here to make all you believe in the power of OGDA. You either get on board and ride the rainbow to glory, or get broken in two and tossed in the ditch like an empty big gulp cup. There is only one person in the OCW who can take on and beat the current unbeatable Craze Champion.”
OGDA nods.
“Forget Mister Best. Forget Miss Hernadez. There is only one name you need to look out for. Don’t believe me? Go back and watch Massacre. It was sign when I helped Mister Dept. When I neatly folded his Bible Club shirt and placed it on the turnbuckle. You do good deeds and you will be repaid for being a good person. Deep down, that is what everyone wants to be, a good person.”
OGDA holds up his one finger as something just came to him.
“I once watched a TV show, it’s been canceled and that kinda makes me sad because I will never know who Earl JR’s daddy is. This show was called My Name is Earl. It was all about karma and being a better person. It’s a message that the OCW needs right now. Like how Earl told Randy, Do good things and good things happen to you. Do bad things, they’ll come back to haunt you. This! Should be a lesson that everyone in this over the top and into the pool battle royale should take to heart. The OCW has written off OGDA. The OCW forgot about Bester. Guess what? Guess who has been hand picked from Mister God? That’s correct. OGDA. In a match full of pretenders with one legit superhero. A ring full of nonbelievers. Enter the one guy who can toss each and every single one of you over the top rope and drop ya in that murky water. I won’t even sweat it either. I’m just doing god’s work. It’s my destiny. Swooping in to run the table, dropping jaws and making believers out of the misguided. With the Rainbow Warriors behind me, all of you can’t stop me. I won’t be stopped! And the only name you need to remember coming out of NSFW is mine.”
OGDA turns away from the mirror and looks right into the camera.
“Orgulloso Guardián Del Arcoiris.”
OGDA puts his hands together like he is going to pray.
Fade out.
